I RESCUED A HUMAN TODAY by Janine Allen

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her.

I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn’t be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn’t want her to know that I hadn’t been walked today. Sometimes the overworked shelter keepers get too busy and I didn’t want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone’s life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.

Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms.

I would promise to keep her safe.

I would promise to always be by her side.

I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.

I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven’t walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.

Hiking with your dog!

Hello All,

Can you believe that it’s November already? I know the leaves have almost all fallen here in Ohio, but it is sure a good time to take a fall walk and enjoy the beauty before winter hits! This is my favorite time of year… did I hear the word walk… you wait here while I get my leash!

I thought I’d pass on some hiking tips for my four legged friends.

1. Try not to use the extending types of leashes in the park. You might spend more time untangling your pooch if he gets too far ahead of you than actually walking!

2. If you dog responds well to commands, (what one doesn’t!?!) you might want to let him off leash. This is a great way for him to do some exploring on his own, just make sure the park / area you are at allows unleashed pups!

3. Remember, not everyone is a dog lover (yes, hard to believe) so make sure you have your leash ready if you see someone on the trail.

4. Always make sure your dog has I.D. tags on him! Leashed or un-leashed, it's always better to play it safe and wear those I.D. tags!

5. You never know what you will encounter on a hike, make sure your dogs shots are up to date!

6. It’s a great way to start training your dog if you give him treats whenever you pass by others. This way your pooch will learn to come to you when he sees others.

7. Even in the woods, you still must clean up after your dog! Please!

8. Stay hydrated! Bring water for two! Don’t like your pooch drink from puddles… Yuck!

9. Lastly, once your walk is complete, give your dog a good look over. Make sure you check for ticks and other bugs. Be thorough! When in doubt regarding a bite, always check with your vet!

8 ways to keep your dog safe this Halloween!

Hello All,

It’s October! Time for turning leaves, pumpkin picking and Halloween treats! I love this time of year, don’t you? I thought I’d pass along some Halloween safety tips for all of my 4 legged friends!

1. Chocolate is a no-no for dogs. It can cause all sorts of problems for dogs including vomiting, diarrhea and even seizures. Candy containing artificial sweeteners can be poisonous too, and be very careful of candy wrappers that get left around; the foil and cellophane wrappers can cause choking!

2. Don’t let dogs eat pumpkins or decorative corn. They can cause gastrointestinal upset or intestinal blockage!

3. If you decorate for the holiday be careful to hide electric cords and keep decorations out of reach! Puppies love to chew!

4. If you carve a pumpkin, be careful if you light it. An excited pup can knock over the lit pumpkin and start a fire or get burned!

5. Please don’t dress up your dog unless he really wants to, sometimes a dog can get very uncomfortable and it causes stress.

6. If your dog does love to dress up, make sure the costume is safe. It should not constrict movement, hearing or sight. Try a “dress rehearsal” night. Make sure there are no small pieces parts to chew off! Remember a festive bandana is another option!

7. Too many costumed visitors can scare a dog! If he seems upset, maybe you might need to put him in a separate room during the busy times.

8. When you open the door for trick or treaters, make sure your dog doesn’t dart outside! And always make sure you dog is wearing his collar with identification! Just incase he escapes and becomes lost!

Hello all,

What a beautiful week it has been here in Northeast Ohio. Warm sunny days followed by cool nights. Great for busy days and sleeping at night!

This month, when I was looking at all of the things that happened in September, I couldn’t believe the number of TV Premier Anniversary’s there were. Some of the more popular shows were:

40th Anniversary of “Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?” Isn't he one of the coolest dogs ever?

45th Anniversary of “The Munster’s” and “Flipper”

55th Anniversary of “The Tonight Show”

And can you believe it, it is the 60th Anniversary of “The Lone Ranger”

Those are some great shows; I especially like Scooby and Flipper! Pass that popcorn!

Camp has gone to the dogs!

Did you know you can go to camp with your dog?

Looking around on the internet recently, I found "Camp Gone to the Dogs" in Vermont! It’s a camp run by people with a love of dogs and they cater to people who enjoy spending time with them. It’s not a doggie day care or dog sitting service! Dogs are welcome anywhere except in the dining halls but then campers can opt to sit outside with their buddy. They offer between 40-50 activities a day! A dog can learn new tricks, learn to hunt, track, hurd, swim, there are even classes for humans on doggie massage or leash making!

Dog days of summer and more...

Hello everyone!

Happy August 1st! It’s officially the “dog days of summer”! I had to do some research to really know what that means. Did you know that the term comes from the Greeks and the ancient Romans? They both believed that Sirius, the Dog Star, caused the hot sultry weather. His star would shine in the sky in later July and August. That’s one “hot dog”!! ha-ha

Has everyone been enjoying their summer? I have, I went to my grandparents house for a week in July. My family went on vacation and I got to spend some quality time with them. I had a great time! I followed grandpa to the pond every morning and he and I fed the fish! What fun that was! I sat with grandma while she read, rested with grandpa while he napped (I guess I napped too!) Protected their house while they were gone and I even got a new bandana!

Some interesting dates in August are:

August 1st – My “human” sister Amanda’s 13th birthday!

August 3rd – National watermelon day. Enjoy a nice cold slice for me.

August 10th – National S’mores day

August 15th – National relaxation day! (This is my kind of day!)

August 26th – National Dog Day - This is a day to honor dogs for all that they do for us. Giving us unconditional love and companionship, but many dogs are watchdogs, help the blind and disabled, search and rescue and sniff out bombs and drugs. It’s a day to acknowledge homelessness and abuse and maybe adopt a rescued dog! It’s a great opportunity to recognize and appreciate the value, love and importance of dogs in our lives and a very special part of our families.

Now for my joke of the month:

Little Harold was practicing the violin in the living room while his father was trying to read in the den. The family dog, a Westie, was lying in the den, and as the screeching sounds of little Harold’s violin reached his ears, he began to howl loudly. The father listened to the dog and the violin as long as he could. Then he jumped up, slammed his paper to the floor and yelled above the noise, “For Pete’s sake. Can’t you play something the dog doesn’t know?!”

Did you guess the breed of the month? Yup, it was an easy one this month… a West Highland White Terrier! Did you know that the Westie is very affectionate and makes a great addition to any family? They are devoted and loving and make a great “travel dog” because of their size. They generally weigh between 13-22 pounds, and have a bright white coat that needs to be brushed daily.

Now for my joke of the month

An avid duck hunter was in the market for a new bird dog. His search ended when he found a dog that could actually walk on water to retrieve a duck. Shocked by his find, he was sure none of his friends would ever believe him.

He decided to try to break the news to a friend of his, a pessimist by nature, and invited him to hunt with him and his new dog. As they waited by the shore, a flock of ducks flew by. They fired, and a duck fell. The dog responded and jumped into the water. The dog, however, did not sink but instead walked across the water to retrieve the bird, never getting more than his paws wet. The friend saw everything but did not say a single word.

On the drive home the hunter asked his friend, "Did you notice anything unusual about my new dog?"

"I sure did," responded his friend. "He can't swim.”

Did you guess the breed of the month? It’s a little tricky, since there are several bird dogs, the list includes, the pointer, English Setter, Red Setter, German Shorthair Pointer and the Brittany to name a few. I chose the Brittany, to be my breed of the month.

Did you know that the Brittany is widely considered easy to train and is sensitive, and good-tempered? They are also known to get along well with other dogs and can work as a team. They weigh between 30 and 40 lbs and require regular brushing, but their coat is easy to maintain. The Brittany will point and hold his game and will retrieve both on land and in water. He is used primarily in the United States for bird hunting, but is used on both fur and feather in France.

This is one of the Brittany Candles that we recently made.

Are you and your dog feeling stressed out over the economy?

Are you stressed over the current recession? You could be stressing out your dog too! Recent research from the University of Florida states that dogs are more aware of human behavior than previously believed. Dogs can pick up our tone, body language and our sense of fear. So, if you are nervous about the economy remember that your best friend is watching!

To help calm your dog and yourself, here are a few tips to keep in mind.

Your dog can pick up on your tone of voice and body language. Try to keep a moderate tone even when talking about stressful situations.

If your schedule has changed, due to lack of employment, try to keep your dogs schedule the same or modify it over time. Any sudden changes should be avoided.

Make sure meal time and walks are at the same time everyday. Just like you take time to adjust when you go on vacation, your dog needs some time to adjust as well.

Veterinary care is still a must for your dog! Things might be a bit tight, but it is important for your dog to stay healthy to avoid preventable issues. Some vets might even help out with a payment plan! Your dog is a member of the family and you wouldn't put off health care for a loved one.

Exercise everyday! Its fun, cheap and easy and it’s a huge stress releaser! The endorphins that you feel when exercising, have the same effect on your dog.

Your dog can be your best friend and he is always there to listen! They can be a great source of stress relief just by being a non judgmental and offer unconditional love. And besides, who can't smile when they get a big wet kiss from their favorite pooch!

It's March! Can spring be close by?

With the warmer temperatures, comes the mud! I just hate waiting by the door to get my paws cleaned! But I guess it's the price to pay to enjoy being outside! Pretty soon flowers will start to emerge and birds will be singing with all their hearts! What a great time of year!

What do you call an Irish Setter with a lucky streak?

A four-leaf rover!

The Irish Setter is a great family dog. They will get along well with children, other dogs and any household pet. They are an active breed and require long daily walks and really enjoy running off lead in wide open spaces. However, they are a breed with a tendency to 'play deaf' so careful training is a must. Geez, mom never says I'm deaf... she just says "I'm not listening!" Maybe, just maybe, I'm part Irish Setter too, they are not the breed that will attack an intruder, unless you count on the intruder being licked to death!

Puppy proofing your home - 17 tips to keep your new addition safe.

Did you know that March 23 is considered National Puppy Day? So, in honor of all those new puppies, I thought it would be fitting to talk about puppy proofing your home! It is just as important to puppy proof your home as you when a new baby arrives. Especially since they are moving around and chewing almost from day 1!

Living Room –

1. Tuck in electronic wires and cables the best you can. Spray the cables and wires with Bitter Apple to deter chewing or conceal them in hard plastic or rubber runners.

2. If there is a smoker in the house, make sure ashtrays and tobacco products are kept away from pups reach.

3. Keep shoes and toys away from puppies, they love to chew! A child’s bedroom and playroom should be off limits unless the pup is supervised.

4. Small objects are also a danger to pups. Swallowed small items such as coins, rubber bands, nails, screws, earrings and small toys can get lodged in your puppy’s digestive track. Many plants can be toxic if chewed too, so make sure small items and plants are kept out of reach.

5. Puppies can slip and fall down the stairs, make sure you use baby gates to keep that new puppy safe.

6. Keep candles out of reach of your puppy. Unlit candles can broken and lit candles especially cute ones like I help make at http://www.dogcandlesandmore.com/ are interesting with the fragrances and flickering candle light and can lead to burns or even worse to fires. It is always best to keep them out of reach of your puppy.

Bathroom –

7. Check at your puppy’s level for medications and cleaning supplies. Don’t store these items under the sink unless you install a child lock on the cabinets.

8. Keep that toilet seat down!

9. Put away hair dryers and curling irons. These items can be knocked down and accidentally turned on.

Kitchen –

10. Keep trash cans covered and behind closed doors if possible. Coffee grounds and spoiled foods can be hazardous to puppies.

11. Just like in the bathroom, keep cleaners and soaps away from puppy’s reach. Another childproof lock might be a good idea!

12. Store baking goods, especially chocolate and raisins on a high shelf.

13. Keep the dishwasher closed, dirty plates and utensils are temping for a puppy to taste.

Garage –

14. Antifreeze can taste sweet but is deadly. Keep bottles on a high shelf in the garage and frequently check your car for leaks.

15. Keep pesticides, fertilizers, batteries, cleaners, solvents, motor oil, and gasoline all way from your new pups reach.

Outside –

16. Don’t leave your puppy outside unattended. Check your fence for holes and keep an eye on him until he learns his boundaries.

17. A curious pup may fall into a poor or pond. Keep the pool or pond fenced off and consider getting a pool alarm that sounds if something falls into the water.

Everything is new and exciting to your new puppy, but not everything is safe.
You can reduce risks by creating a dog-friendly environment. Get down on the floor and look around at puppy eye level. See his world as he would see it to help make your pup's new home safe.

Pet Photo winner for January Entries

Hi everyone,

Congratulations goes out to Wendy of Fairport Harbor, Ohio for her picture of Pug. Pug has been chosen as the pet photo winner for the month of January. Pug lives down a dirt road named Murray Hollow in Shushan New York. She is a mixed breed who adopted Wendy's grandparents more than 10 years ago.

After Wendy's grandfather passed away, Pug made it her job to protect Granny. She even seems to know when Granny isn't feeling well and sleeps at the foot of her bed. Most of the time she prefers to sleep outside Granny's window or in the garage on an old blanket. Granny is 91 now and the two are pretty close. She even brings Granny her food bowl when it's time for dinner! Wendy will receive an "I love my dog" candle.
