Dachshund Gifts and information

The name dachshund is a German word and comes from the original purpose of the breed. Dachs means badger, and Hund is dog and they were developed to go into burrows of badgers and flush them out.

They are an elongated dog breed with short legs and are a member of the hound family. They have muscular bodies with paddle like feet to make digging a breeze. The also have elongated snout with a large nose area to absorb scents.

The two recognized standards for dachshunds are Standard (15 to 28lbs) and Miniature (Under 11 lbs), but there is also a standard called a Kaninchen (which means rabbit) (8-10 lbs). There are also three coat varieties; smooth coat (short hair), long hair, and wire hair and all of them come in a wide variety of colors.

Dachshunds can be playful yet stubborn. They love to chase things. I can attest to both traits from my childhood dog Hansi. I would spend most of my summer fishing in a small lake by my parents cabin. Hansi would chase the frogs, birds and whatever was attached to the end of my fishing line, whether that was a fishing float or a hook and worm. As you can imagine, I caught a dog “fish” a number of times, but he never would stop chasing it. As far as the stubborn, he didn’t like to be left alone at home. One time we had to go out so we put him in our basement. He was so mad at us that he managed to pull the rug out from underneath a grand piano.

Dachshunds are very loyal dogs and are also very popular in the United States and in 2008, they ranked 7th in popularity in AKC registrations.

There are many dachshund gifts available from coffee mugs to magnets and ornaments to candles that feature photo quality images. If you have a dachshund or know someone that has a dachshund, they are sure to enjoy a gift featuring images of their dog breed or even their dog.
